Community First with Students at Its Heart
High Expectations, Strong Community, and a Relentless Focus on Student Success
At South Vermillion Community School Corporation, leadership is guided by a simple but powerful belief: schools exist to produce capable, productive citizens who are prepared for whatever path they choose.
Under the direction of Superintendent Dr. Micah Williams and Assistant Superintendent Ronda Foster, the district is aligning its academic programs, financial strategy, and community partnerships around that central mission. Though this marks their first year serving in their current roles, both leaders bring decades of combined experience within the corporation. Their vision is grounded in continuity, accountability, and high standards.
“Our goal,” Dr. Williams explains, “is to ensure our students are prepared—whether that’s pursuing a four-year degree, earning a certificate, or entering the workforce—and ultimately to give them the tools to contribute meaningfully to their community.”
Supporting the Whole Student
A core component of that preparation is social-emotional support. Recognizing the increased pressures facing students and educators alike, South Vermillion has expanded its student services infrastructure in recent years. In addition to traditional school counselors, the district has implemented student support service counselors who provide more targeted, tiered interventions at both the elementary and secondary levels.
These supports include structured programs designed to address behavioral and decision-making challenges in constructive ways. At the middle and high school levels, students have access to intervention programs that focus on education, accountability, and healthier alternatives rather than strictly punitive measures. The intent is clear: guide students toward better choices while maintaining high expectations.
That same philosophy extends to teacher support. District leadership maintains a strong, visible presence in school buildings, prioritizing early intervention and open communication. Through structured “vision teams,” staff members have formal channels to discuss concerns, propose solutions, and provide feedback directly to administration.
“It’s important that teachers know they are supported,” Foster says. “When expectations are high, support must be equally strong.”
Community Alignment and Collaboration
As one of the largest employers in the region, South Vermillion Community School Corporation plays a central role in the economic and cultural life of the community. Leadership works closely with county officials, safety coalitions, and local businesses to ensure that district priorities align with broader community values.

The district has established separate vision teams for staff, community members, parents, and students. This collaborative model ensures that decision-making reflects a range of perspectives. Whether addressing long-term strategy or operational matters such as the academic calendar, leadership seeks meaningful input before finalizing decisions.
Business partnerships are also integral to the district’s approach. Strong relationships with regional employers such as Elanco Animal Health and Union Health provide valuable real-world connections for students. These partnerships extend beyond simple engagement; they create opportunities for internships, work-based learning, and exposure to high-demand career fields.
STEM, STEAM, and Career Pathways
Academic innovation remains a priority across all grade levels. At the elementary level, South Vermillion has transitioned from a traditional STEM model to STEAM, integrating the arts into science and technology instruction. Project-based learning and creative collaboration are emphasized early, building foundational skills in problem-solving and innovation.
In middle school, students engage in computer science and robotics programs that have earned recognition at the world competition level. These experiences not only build technical proficiency but also foster teamwork, critical thinking, and perseverance.
At the high school level, advanced programming includes a dedicated cybersecurity lab funded through community support. Students have opportunities to engage with higher education partners such as Indiana State University, gaining firsthand exposure to postsecondary laboratories and career pathways in technology and information security.
Complementing these offerings is a growing broadcasting program, where students manage live production and commentary for athletic events. The initiative provides authentic, hands-on experience in media production, communication, and digital technology—skills increasingly relevant in today’s workforce.
Technology with Purpose
South Vermillion has operated as a one-to-one device district for more than a decade. However, leadership is deliberate about how technology is used in classrooms.
Dr. Williams emphasizes that devices are tools, not replacements for instruction. Classroom dialogue, direct teaching, repetition of core skills, and foundational mastery remain central to the district’s instructional philosophy. By reinforcing basics in areas such as mathematics and written communication, the district seeks to build strong academic foundations before layering in more complex problem-solving.
This balanced approach also supports the development of essential soft skills—punctuality, professionalism, collaboration, and clear communication—that are critical in both higher education and the workplace.
Dual Enrollment and Workforce Readiness
Preparing students for life beyond high school includes reducing financial barriers to postsecondary education. Through partnerships with Ivy Tech Community College and regional career and technical cooperatives, South Vermillion offers extensive dual-credit opportunities. Students can graduate with significant college credit, and in some cases, an associate degree earned simultaneously with their high school diploma.

Career and technical pathways span a wide range of disciplines, including building trades, culinary arts, veterinary sciences, graphic design, and welding. Work-based learning placements with local employers provide students with direct industry exposure, reinforcing the practical application of their studies.
This comprehensive approach acknowledges a key reality: success after high school takes many forms. By offering both college preparatory and skilled trade pathways, the district ensures that students can pursue careers aligned with their strengths and interests.
Strategic Financial Stewardship
Like many districts, South Vermillion has faced enrollment declines and shifting funding structures. In response, leadership made difficult but necessary decisions to ensure long-term sustainability. By consolidating facilities and carefully managing expenditures, the district stabilized its financial position while preserving academic programming.
A significant portion of recent investment has focused on compensation. Teacher salary increases in recent years have exceeded typical benchmarks, and the district is actively working toward a $50,000 minimum salary target. Classified staff wages have also increased, reinforcing the district’s commitment to attracting and retaining high-quality personnel across all roles.
At the same time, leadership remains focused on maintaining clean, well-kept facilities. Visitors frequently remark on the condition of district buildings—a point of pride that reflects careful stewardship of taxpayer resources.
A Forward-Focused Vision
Looking ahead, South Vermillion Community School Corporation has identified three primary priorities: strengthening teacher recruitment and retention, driving academic improvement through thoughtful data analysis, and continuing responsible capital planning to support modern, safe learning environments.

Throughout each initiative, one theme remains consistent—high expectations paired with meaningful support. For South Vermillion Community School Corporation, success is measured not only in test scores or athletic achievements, but in the character, competence, and contribution of its graduates.
In a rapidly evolving educational landscape, the district’s steady commitment to fundamentals, innovation, and community partnership positions it for continued progress—one student at a time.
