Bringing the World to Miami Beach
Providing the Very Best Event Experience and Local Economic Engine in the Heart of Florida’s Tourist Paradise
For Freddie Peterson, General Manager of the Miami Beach Convention Center, the answer to an unparalleled event experience is not only a second-to-none venue, but a welcoming atmosphere, cutting-edge technology, and a highly experienced staff to bring it all together. Topping the perfect mix of ingredients is location, location, location.
In a destination known worldwide for its scenic beaches and lively culture, the convention center is in a spot that is not only close to a world-famous beach, but also just a short 12 miles from the Miami International Airport and the spectacular lights of downtown Miami
As Peterson aptly points out, the Miami Beach Convention Center, which is owned by the City of Miami Beach and managed by Oak View Group, is also gaining traction as a powerful economic engine and a go-to destination for conventions, trade shows, and events in South Florida.
With a sweeping campus encompassing 1.4 million square feet of venue space, 9 acres of green spaces and a calendar that spans everything from global tech conferences to exciting regional events, the Convention Center is not only hosting top-tier gatherings, it’s also helping shape the future of Miami and Miami Beach.
“We are indeed built for economic impact,” Peterson highlights.
A World-Class Transformation
The Convention Center’s transformation began with a $640 million investment by the City of Miami Beach. Completed in 2020, the reimagined facility reopened just as the world was navigating the uncertainty of COVID. But instead of slowing things down, the reopening brought renewed focus and momentum. “That’s how we’re built,” Peterson touts. “It’s about heads and beds, the restaurants, the shops, the stores, and then, just putting people to work.”
With approximately 140 events annually and about 500,000 guests, the resulting hotel stays, restaurant reservations, retail purchases, and the tax revenue that flows from them are enormous. “It’s a bit of a domino effect,” Peterson says. “I like to say that we’re the center of gravity when it comes to business development, business growth, and the economic impact side of things.”
That gravity pulls in business not just for Miami Beach, but for the entire region. Miami Beach Convention Center’s activity not only supports the area’s hospitality and retail industries, but it also sustains a wide network of contractors, part-time and full-time employees. “We are probably the largest employer in the destination, just because of the sheer volume of year-round activity,” Peterson notes. “Being that conduit to provide opportunity is incredibly important to us, and we live by that every single day.”

Sustainability at Scale
For a venue that hosts half a million people a year, sustainability is more than a marketing slogan. “The city takes it so seriously, it’s actually embedded into our contracts as well. We also work with our customers and contract partners on sustainability initiatives,” Peterson highlights.
From waste diversion and composting to corporate social responsibility initiatives, environmental stewardship is a shared responsibility between the venue and its partners.
As a result, the Convention Center recently achieved Gold Level certification from the Events Industry Council for sustainability and social impact. “We went from silver to gold in a year,” he boasts. “That is a huge lift on our end to move that quickly. It just goes to show you the determination that we have when it comes to sustainability.”
The Center also earned a Four Key rating through the Green Key Global program, becoming one of the first convention centers in the United States to do so. Peterson says a partnership with the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau was central to that achievement.

Other sustainability partners include the venue’s exclusive food and beverage provider, Sodexo Live! Who operate a robust composting program that sends food waste to local farms, along with a food donation program that sees food distributed to local non-profit organizations.
“We also have the Community Assistance by Responsible Events (CARE) program. A lot of leftover product, and anything like that, we work with local nonprofits to donate back to the community,” he says.
In collaboration with the Rum Room Restaurant and Venu, Sodexo Live!, and Compost for Life Miami, the Center has launched an on-site herb and vegetable garden, meant to educate staff on sustainable practices, while also providing fresh produce for the restaurant.
“It does take a village, as everybody likes to say, to keep that comprehensive approach, to look at our environmental footprint, and to advance community-focused initiatives,” asserts Peterson. “And it doesn’t end here because we’ve achieved it. It continues daily, and it really drives our team working into 26 and, of course, well beyond that.”
A Constant State of Reinvention
Since its reopening, investment has not slowed. In fact, it has accelerated. “In my entire 28-year career, the investments that the city continues to make in this building on capital and infrastructure improvements are absolutely amazing,” Peterson recounts.
Currently, more than $23 million in capital projects are planned or underway. These include new LED lighting throughout the 500,000 square feet of exhibition halls, a major roof replacement, and the installation of four massive LED video walls in the West Lobby as part of a $1.5 million digital enhancement.
More than just aesthetic upgrades, these video walls create new sponsorship and revenue opportunities for event organizers and eliminate the need for printed banners and wraps. “When our amazing team goes up to sell, this digital programming becomes very much an important asset, because they can take it and monetize it,” Peterson says.

Technology partners are also funding upgrades in the facility. Encore and Smart City Networks each signed multi-year contracts that include more than $2.7 million combined in equipment upgrades, Wi-Fi 7 capabilities, enhanced cybersecurity, and redundancy systems.
Safety and security are equally prioritized. In partnership with Honeywell, the city has invested more than $250,000 in new security cameras and life safety systems. The campus now features more than 600 cameras and over 1,700 strobes, exceeding code requirements and reinforcing a safety-first philosophy. “When you’re entrusted with such a large asset, you really have to put safety and security first,” Peterson underscores.
A Game Changer Next Door
Adding to the potential, Miami Beach Convention Center will soon be home to the Grand Hyatt Miami Beach Headquarters Hotel. This 800-room property, developed by Terra and Turnberry, is scheduled to open in late 2027. In terms of what this means for the venue, Peterson says it will be “Transformational. A game changer.” He continues, “Without the Headquarters Hotel, a lot of our requests for proposals we could not qualify for because it mandated an attached hotel.”
The addition is expected to increase the association and meetings business by more than 40 percent and open the venue up to higher-caliber events. When paired with the original $640 million renovation, the combined investment in the Convention Center and adjacent hotel will exceed $1.2 billion.
“This really opens up a vast amount of high-quality types of events that will be able to come into the building because of those RFPs,” he relays, noting that surrounding improvements further enhance the district’s appeal.
Community at the Core
For all its global reach, the Convention Center’s focus remains local. “We talk about being a connective tissue to the community, to the neighborhood, to the host neighborhoods here in Miami Beach,” Peterson imparts. “It’s really important to us.”
Peterson sits on the board of the Collins Park Neighborhood Association and emphasizes the valuable relationships with Miami Beach Senior High School, Florida International University, and the University of Miami.
“To build that talent pipeline for growth and knowledge transfer is really, really important,” he says. “We have several people who have been a part of those institutions that are now working here for us. So to look at that workforce development and to really kind of key in and focus on community initiatives is important.”
Recognition on a Global Stage
In 2025, the Miami Beach Convention Center received the Venue Excellence Award from the International Association of Venue Managers. “It represents an industry top honor of how outstanding we are compared to other venues,” Peterson relays. “I’m just super proud of that.” The award recognizes exceptional management, leadership, innovation, and commitment to excellence on a global scale. “None of this would be possible without the investment that the city has made,” he acknowledges. “From a venue perspective, to have that award, and then for the people here, it’s just truly amazing.”
Looking Ahead
For the Miami Beach Convention Center, the future is filled with opportunity. Major global events are on the horizon, including Sibos, an international fintech conference projected to generate $40 million in economic impact over ten days. “That is a huge number to think about,” Peterson says. Adobe MAX is also returning after a successful 2024 event.

“They’re coming back because of what their attendees experienced while they were in Miami Beach. So that’s a testament to what this destination brings to those types of events,” he adds. In January 2027, PCMA Convening Leaders will bring more than 5,000 decision makers to the Convention Center. The facility is ready to welcome the planners who decide where the next wave of conventions lands.
“I’m just extremely humble and proud and grateful to be a part of all of this,” Peterson concludes. “When I talk about what the destination of Miami Beach and the teams are doing and the investment that the city continues to make, we could not be at a better moment in time.”
