Strategically Located to Further Take Off
A Regional Gateway Powering Southern West Virginia’s Growth
Strategically positioned near Interstates 64 and 77, Raleigh County Memorial Airport (BKW) continues to serve as a vital transportation link and an expanding economic catalyst for southern West Virginia. Through capital investment and planning, the airport is building on its strong foundation while advancing with infrastructure advancements and development initiatives that reinforce its role in the region’s long-term growth.
Owned by the Raleigh County Commission and governed by the Raleigh County Airport Authority, BKW officially opened its doors in 1952. Since then, the airport has been offering a range of aviation-related operations, from daily commercial flights to private services and charters, and freight shipping airline traffic.
Showcasing an energetic blend of accessibility and Appalachian character, BKW is located in Beaver, just minutes from the city of Beckley, the county seat, and one of the state’s most scenic communities. Its setting in the heart of the Mountain State also places Raleigh County Memorial Airport within easy reach of outdoor recreation and attractions, thriving business corridors, and a growing industrial base.
Commercial air service is provided by Contour Airlines, offering daily flights to Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina, and giving passengers convenient access to global destinations. For travelers, the experience is remarkably efficient and straightforward. Parking is adjacent to the terminal, security screening is streamlined, and passengers can move comfortably from curb to gate in minutes.
Beyond air service, Raleigh County Memorial Airport continues to advance its position as an ideal site for industrial growth. BKW holds approximately 160 acres of property within the airport fence, including 100 acres adjacent to active taxiways with access to utilities, further strengthening the appeal to aerospace-related enterprises.
Building Capacity from Runway to Terminal
Raleigh County Memorial Airport boasts a primary north-south runway measuring 6,750 feet by 150 feet, fully equipped to accommodate regional commercial aircraft and a wide range of general aviation traffic.
A 2001 runway resurfacing project led to prioritizing infrastructure enhancements that were designed to support future development on the airport’s west side. Complementing this is a secondary 5,000 by 100-foot airstrip, giving BKW added capacity and flexibility to accommodate growing aviation and industry needs.

Along with airfield optimizations, BKW is also investing in upgrades to its passenger facilities. In 2024, the airport completed approximately $1.3 million in upgrades to an existing 1978 terminal, funded in part through Federal Aviation Administration programs. Improvements focused on enhancing functionality and preparing the airport to accommodate future growth.
The project doubled terminal seating, refreshed interior spaces, and updated amenities, resulting in an updated environment that meets current needs and positions the airport for continued expansion.
Capital Investment and Long-Term Planning
Current capital projects at BKW total approximately $9 million, contributing to roughly $15 million in overall planned enhancements. These investments focus on airfield rehabilitation, such as primary runway resurfacing and taxiway reconstruction. In addition, ongoing aerospace site development aims to showcase the airport’s runway length, available land, and regional workforce to attract aviation-related industries.
Industrial site development and infrastructure readiness are also priorities. Raleigh County Memorial Airport is at the center of more than 250 acres of developable property through its east and west Industrial Parks, representing one of the region’s most valuable economic expansion opportunities.
Currently, a 100-acre industrial development on the west side of the airport property is nearing completion. Backed by a $10.4 million investment, supported by local, state, and federal funding, the development aims to be site-ready for potential industries. It includes grading, roadway access, and utility infrastructure installation. With only a sewer line extension remaining, the property is ready to welcome prospective industrial tenants.
Regional Partnerships Driving Growth
The airport’s development efforts are closely aligned with the New River Gorge Regional Development Authority, which is helping to ensure that aviation planning and regional economic strategy are compatible.

With this in mind, New River Gorge RDA is actively seeking out agencies to market the industrial park and promote commercial air service. The goal is to elevate the airport’s visibility among site selectors while showcasing the area’s opportunities.
Building a skilled labor pipeline is also essential for attracting aerospace and advanced manufacturing operations, and the presence of educational partners boosts BKW’s value to potential industry investment. Through collaborations with New River Community and Technical College and West Virginia University Institute of Technology, the airport helps develop the skilled workforce needed for these high-demand careers.
Economic Impact on the Beckley Region
The airport’s economic contribution is more than direct aviation employment. Commercial air service supports tourism, business travel, and regional connectivity. The New River Gorge area, which has gained increased national recognition in recent years, benefits from accessible air transportation for visitors.
For local businesses, corporate travelers, and manufacturers, the dependable air service that Raleigh County Memorial Airport provides is essential to maintaining relationships and connecting to domestic and international destinations. This reliable service also supports competitiveness.
Industrial park development adds yet another layer of economic potential. By preparing site-ready property adjacent to the airport, the county is creating opportunities for job growth and capital investment. The combination of interstate connectivity, available acreage, and airfield capability positions BKW as so much more than a passenger facility. It is a multi-layered economic driver for the greater community.
Notably, the U.S. Department of Transportation recently announced that Contour Airlines will continue to provide air service through BKW for at least the next four years, offering 12 round-trip flights per week to Charlotte Douglas International Airport. The airline has been serving BKW since 2018, tripling passenger traffic and reflecting a growing need in the community.
With daily flights, competitively priced hangar space, charter services, and fuel, plus a growing landscape of industry opportunities, Raleigh County Memorial Airport is a key resource for the Southern West Virginia area.
Looking ahead, the airport stands as a hub of potential, poised to drive economic growth and connect the region to new possibilities.
